| Things
to think about before you visit a Furniture Store
|
 |
-
Choose a reputable store, a store
that is known to give good service both before and
after the sale. In addition, better stores will tend
to carry furniture from better quality manufacturers.
The store you purchase from will also serve as your
first point of contact in the event there is a problem
with your purchase.
- Focus on the entire room. If you are in the market
for a new sofa for your family room, survey all the
furniture in the room to determine what you plan on
keeping and what will eventually be replaced. Plan the
whole room now even if you can only afford a new sofa
at this time. Picture in your mind how a new sofa will
look with the other furniture currently in the room.
- Look through magazines for styles that fit your needs.
- Sketch the room. Include doors, windows, fireplace,
current furniture, and traffic patterns.
- Bring samples of colors that you will be keeping in
the room (carpet, paint, other furniture).
- Think about how the room will be used now and in the
future.
- Think about the impact of the following:
Children
Pets
Adjoining rooms
Sunlight
Future needs
- Start to think about a budget for this purchase.
- Determine your timetable. Keep in mind that special
order merchandise can take six to ten weeks to arrive.
- Be prepared to spend some time in making your selection.
If you spend a little more time in making your selection
you will probably be more satisfied when it is delivered.
- When you are greeted by a
sales associate, explain to
them what you are looking for
and have them direct you to
the appropriate area in the
store.
- If you cannot find what you
are looking for, check with
your sales associate to see
if there are catalogs that you
can review. Most stores can
only display a small fraction
of what their vendors offer.
Keep in mind that it is easier
to purchase functional items
(dressers, chests) from catalogs
than comfort items (sofas, chairs
and recliners).
- If you find an item that you
like, ask your sales associate
about options. For sofas, there
should be a variety of fabrics
available or different finishes
for dressers, tables, or chairs.
- Ask your sales associate about
delivery times, financing, deposit
required, delivery charge, and
disposal of your old items.
With this checklist you should be well
on your way to finding the perfect furniture!
